We have drilled into the history of the nominees and winners of the Best Picture Oscar.
But the Academy, mighty as they might be, is only one point of view on what films are most deserving of a given year’s top honor. Thankfully, there are other voices out there that help provide an alternative, and in many cases better, assessment of what films deserve our attention.
Earlier this year, Film School Rejects put together their own great list of 100 films that were not nominated for best picture but, in their opinion, should have been.
After checking out their commentary on each film, take a look below to find out where each title is available. For this list, we are only looking at subscription, free, and ad-supported streaming but all of these titles are also available to rent and/or buy except for the following:
Atlantics, Beau Travail, Chungking Express, Cléo from 5 to 7, In the Mood for Love, Nightmare Alley, The Devils, They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?, and To Be or Not To Be.
Multiple personal appearances on this list include:
Directors:
Alfred Hitchcock, David Cronenberg, George Cukor, Martin Scorsese, Paul Thomas Anderson, Ridley Scott, and Stanley Kubrick, Sydney Pollack, Akira Kurosawa, Christopher Nolan, David Fincher, Howard Hawks, Kar-Wai Wong, Michael Mann, Michael Powell, Spike Lee, Terrence Malick.
Writers:
Paul Thomas Anderson, Jay Cocks, Shinobu Hashimoto, Akira Kurosawa, Christopher Nolan, David Cronenberg, Jules Furthman, Martin Scorsese, Michael Mann, Spike Lee, Stanley Kubrick, Terrence Malick, and Wong Kar-wai.
Let me know what you think of this list and if you think there are any other ones worth checking out as well.
